The Northeastern Division is excited to announce that we are offering two student travel awards to the American Fisheries Society Annual Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii in September 2024. Each award recipient will receive $1,450 USD to be used towards travel, lodging, and conference expenses.
Qualification criteria: The qualified applicant must be an active AFS member (i.e., paid membership dues) who will attend the AFS Annual Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii, in person and present their research (oral or poster presentations are accepted). The award is open to current undergraduate and graduate students or recent graduates with a graduation date after March 2024.
Complete applications should include:
- Cover letter specifying:
- The applicant’s involvement with AFS (e.g., officer of a subunit, serving on a committee, organizer of AFS events).
- Reasons for wanting to attend the meeting and how the applicant will be involved (e.g., participating in business meetings, organizing talks, volunteering).
- A brief description of the applicant’s research that they will be presenting
- Justification for the applicant’s need for travel assistance.
- How the applicant supports AFS’s commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in our society and profession.
- The applicant’s AFS member number.
- Brief breakdown of estimated expenses and anticipated support.
- Title and abstract of submitted paper(s) and/or poster(s).
- Letter of recommendation* from an academic advisor and/or an AFS mentor. The nomination letter should include the nominee’s title and full contact information (i.e., address, e-mail, phone) and the letter should address:
- The applicant’s professionalism and leadership,
- Financial need, and
- AFS involvement.
*If those writing letters prefer, they may email letters separately to the address below, but they must be received by the deadline and should contain the applicant’s name along with the Northeastern Division Aloha Student Travel Award in the subject heading.

Award details
This is an unprecedented award supported by each Chapter within the Division to increase student participation within the Division at the American Fisheries Society Annual Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii. This one-time travel award will only be offered in 2024 to two students. Since this award requires in-person attendance at the Annual Meeting, if selected and the awardee is unable to attend, the award will be given to the runner-up. Following the meeting, the awardees will provide a brief summary of their experience at the Annual Meeting to be shared in the NED newsletter.
